Small Group Activity: Sorting                                   
                                     
Approximate Time: 15 minutes
Materials Needed:
  • Colored cheerios or different colored items. Big paper, draw big circles on the paper to represent each color of the items that you have
Vocabulary: sort, color, how many, same, different 
How to start the activity:
  • Place the cheerios or the different colored small toys on the floor 
  • Tell your child that they all got mixed up and you need them to help you sort them into the same color
What to do in the middle: 
  • Let the child observe the mixed up materials. 
  • Point out where the respective colors are.  I see purple. I wonder where I will put the purple colored cheerio and so on.
  • Count the items in each circle
How you can extend the activity: Compare which item has more items and by how many

How to finish the activity: 
  • Give the child a 5 minutes warning.
  • Tell the child that it is time to clean up. Let him/her help you to put the materials away. 



Small Group Activity: Decorating an old shirt                                 
                                     
Approximate Time: 15 minutes
Materials Needed:
  • Old shirt
  • Markers
  • Paint and brushes
  • Scissors
Vocabulary: Decorate, print, art, artistic, creative, style 
How to start the activity:
  • Place the old shirt on the table and the art materials and tell the child that today we will decorate an old shirt so they can use it as an apron for later on activities.
What to do in the middle: 
  • Ask the child open-ended questions like, “What would you like to do on the shirt? Which colors would you like to use?”
  • Let the child explore the art materials and the way of using them.
How you can extend the activity: Help the child to write his or her letter on the shirt with the paint or even the whole name if you feel your child is capable of doing it.
How to finish the activity: 
  • Give the child a 5 minutes warning.
  • Tell the child that it is time to clean up. Let him/her help you to put the materials away.
  • Put the shirt to dry and the child can use it as an apron for further activities.
