Small Group Activity: Hiding Letters

Approximate Time: 10 minutes
Materials Needed:
  • Pieces of paper (Half A4 papers)
  • Marker
  • Tape
Vocabulary: Hiding, finding, alphabet, hunt
How to start the activity:
  • On the half paper, write a big uppercase letter. Write as many letters as you want and hide them around the room or the house by pasting them on the wall with a small tape.
  • Tell the child that today he/she will go for a letter hunt! You can say something like, “Some letters are hiding all over the room, I wonder if you can find them all!”
What to do in the middle:
  • Let the child go search for the letters. Tell him/her that every time he/she finds one, he/she has to come back to you to show you.
  • When the child brings you a letter, ask him/her “What is this letter?” If the child doesn’t know you make the sound of the letter and ask the child to repeat after you.
  • Encourage the child to find more.
How you can extend the activity: The child can find objects around the room or in his/her toys that start with that letter.
How to finish the activity:
  • Give the child a 5 minutes warning.
  • Tell the child that it is time to clean up. Let him/her help you to put the materials away.
