Small Group Activity: Sorting cans
Approximate Time: 10 minutes

Materials Needed:
● Different can food sizes (peas’ can, beans’ can, tomato paste’s can and more)
|
Vocabulary: Sorting, separating, comparing, similar, different.
|
How to start the activity:
● Place a lot of different cans on the floor.
● Tell children something like, “All the cans got mixed up. I wonder if you can help me to put them together. Can you see another can like this one (holding one up)?”

What to do in the middle:
● Let the child observe the cans, say comments about the cans’ content, ask questions.
● Observe if the child is sorting them or not. You can say something like, “Oh, I found two of the same! Look!”
● If the child decides to do something else with the cans, like towers, lined them up or some other safe action, acknowledge it.

Extension:
The child can count how many cans of a certain product he/she found. Get a paper and make tally marks and write the number with an adult’s help.
|
How to finish the activity:
● Give the child a 5 minutes warning.
● Tell the child that it is time to clean up. Let him/her help you to put the materials away.

Small Group Activity: Scooping letters (plastic or magnetic letters)
Approximate Time: 15 minutes
|
Materials Needed:
● 1 big container with water
● Plastic or magnetic letters
● A big serving spoon from your kitchen
|
Vocabulary: Scoop, dip, pick, alphabet, transfer
|
How to start the activity:
● Tell the child that today they will scoop some letters out of the water. Place the alphabet plastic or magnetic letters in the water and give the child a big serving spoon (it can be to serve soup or the one with holes in the middle).
|
What to do in the middle:
● Observe how the child scoops the letters out of the water.
● Invite the child to scoop all the letters out. Let the child name the letter once he/she takes it out.

Extension:
● Think of other words beginning with the same letter/sound that they scoop out.
|
How to finish the activity:
● Give the child a 5 minutes warning.
● Tell the child that is time to clean up. Let him/her help you to put the materials away.
